GEHC Hosts Unique Exhibit Showcasing American Tradition of Hooked Rugs
This isn’t your 1970s latch hook pillow! Come discover the beauty of the hand hooked rug by experiencing Off the Hook - Exploring Our Rug Hooking Heritage from April 9 through June 30, 2012, in the state-of the-art galleries of the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center (GEHC) in Buford, Georgia.
The GEHC Foundation and the Atlanta Dogwood Chapter Association of Traditional Hooking Artists (ATHA) partnered to bring the story of this two-hundred-year-old hand craft to life. Promotional assistance is provided by ArtWorks! Gwinnett.
Learn about the origins of the craft as a utilitarian object two centuries ago and its development into a mode of self-expression and even fine art. From delicate flowers to bold geometric designs, from curious self-portraits to beloved animals, you will never look at a rug the same way again!
“The Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center is excited to host this unique exhibit,” said Jason West, director of programming and development. “Throughout the exhibit’s time on campus, the GEHC will offer programming and activities focused on the craft.”
The display of hundreds of antique to contemporary hand-hooked rugs, along with hands-on activities and beginner to advanced workshops, launches with a special celebration on April 14, 2012 with national ATHA president Gail Dufresne speaking about the heritage of rug hooking.
Museum tickets (including the exhibition) are available at the door. For admission pricing and additional information, visit www.gwinnettEHC.org. Some education programs require advanced registration and additional fees.
